ok...so I think I may have done something to screw up the lower unit.
I have a 15.5 ft skeeter bass boat with a 140 Johnson outboard (1987).
This has been a perfect running engine. I got stuck in the muck while fishing, trolling motor died, and starting my outboard to get out of the mud. The props weren't moving very well, so of course I gunned it a little bit to get going.
Then when I finally got into open water, the prop was slipping, unless I started with low RPMs and build up. The next week, I heard a tapping (kind of like lifters on a car).
No apparent loss in performance, except at power start (revving with no response). Then at higher rpms the tapping noise.
Any ideas?
