ok...so I think I may have done something to screw up the lower unit.
I have a 15.5 ft skeeter bass boat with a 140 Johnson outboard (1987).
This has been a perfect running engine. I got stuck in the muck while fishing, trolling motor died, and starting my outboard to get out of the mud. The props weren't moving very well, so of course I gunned it a little bit to get going.
Then when I finally got into open water, the prop was slipping, unless I started with low RPMs and build up. The next week, I heard a tapping (kind of like lifters on a car).
No apparent loss in performance, except at power start (revving with no response). Then at higher rpms the tapping noise.

Any ideas?

Spun prop hub? Do you know how to check it?

I think I need a new prop anyway. it's seen better days. Yes, I've read some of the other posts about marking it. I'll do that.
But where do you think the knocking noise is coming from? I changed the oil in the lower unit and there is nothing unusual in the oil.
