1987 alpha 1 sterndrive noise

Hi
after reading extensively in the archives still need advice, the noise is only when I give the engine throttle it is fine at idle sounds like a clanking grinding sound. I don't know when the drive was serviced I did the normal maintenance water pump oil change.

First things first, Pull it and see what you have going on inside. Check the drive drain plug, see if there are any metal chips on it if you have a magnetic one (If not -get one) Is this a new boat? or did this noise just start this season? If its making noise when going straight under throttle, its most likely going to be gears in the drive and not a gimble or u-joint. Does it matter where the engine is trimmed as to how loud the noise it?
