Does this motor have a thermostat that opens after the block heats up or should water be blowing out the exhaust all the time?

Thanks.

yes this engine does have a tstat..that opens when it starts to get warm 130 degrees i think... anyway one sure fire way to see if the impeller and tstat are working is to install a telltail

Your thermostat is located in the square box on the top part of the head. It is either a 110* or 130* thermostat.

The engine will always spray water out the idle relief holes as there is a bypass hole on the thermostat. This allows a metered amount of water to pass until the engine get hot and then the thermostat opens.
