Please tell me this isnt something major! I ran this engine last weekend on the water, and one week later this appeared. It is more of a grease than an oil, but why am I getting this? The engine was maintained by a mechanic, and was most likely greased up prior to me purchasing it. I bought it about a month ago, and I put it on my boat last friday, then on the water on saturday. Is this something I need to look into or what? Please help!

Take some of it and rub it between fingers and smell, if it has a gas/fuel order you have a carb that slightly flooding and dissolving the carbon in exhaust tube(blackness). If it has a burnt gear oil smell the upper driveshaft or prop seal may be leaking, pull oil fill/drain plugs and check the gear oil for water intrusion(usually grey)....

I did smell and feel it and honestly it doesnt smell like gear oil or gas. Is smells and feels like grease. I had the oil/gas black drip on another engine so I know it isnt that. Is it possible that its just excess grease from the shaft? Or is that highly unlikely? Thanks.

It is hard to see in the pic but the color is actually grey, if this helps.

Crack the bottom l/u drain plug for the oil and make sure there's no water in it. If not it's probably unburned fuel/oil.

Thanks boobie, I didnt check that yet but I did remove the prop and it doesnt look like it leaked from any seal, and like i said the consistency and smell are that of grease. If it is unburned fuel and oil is this something i need to be overly concerned with? What should my course of action be? Thanks!

Take and run the heck out of it and then recheck it.

Ha ha thanks! That is actually what I wanted to hear! Truth be told I think thats what I was going to do anyway with the hopes of it not being anything of concern. If it clears up then I'll feel better, if it keeps up I'll be starting a new thread. Thanks everyone for your input happy boating!

My 50 does the exact same thing especially when running it on the muffs for flushing seems to be unburned fuel/oil perhaps you have to much oil in your mixture ... I had the VRO and pre mix going so i think that has alot to do with it.
when running in the water at higer speeds it there is no oil so i am guessing it is not burning all of the oil at idle speeds.
Not a big deal and nothing to worry about.
At least you know oil is passing through your motor :)
