You are correct in assuming it's an 87' model. The only problem that I know of with that motor, is affording the gas because they run forever... :D The VRO needs to be maintained and you should be fine....

Rick,

Is that correct-are they really that good a motor?

Any specific tips on maintaining the VRO?

I have the Clymers shop manual for the motor-not specific to the motor, the general manual-EVINRUDE/JOHNSON 1965-1998 WORKSHOP MANUAL.

And, this may sounds really stupid, but I'm a newb-what is VRO and acronym for pelase?

Matt

Great article Ezeke-thanks for that.

Where I bought the engine, they suggested disengaging the VRO-however my mechanic is an older bloke and he is VERY knowledgeable on outboards and spoke highly of the system and thought there was no issue-he explained that if the diaphram failed it was highly unlikely to damage the engine if I took notice of the engine's altered performance and if the relevant alarms were operative.

Again, thanks.

Matt

Matt

Hey Matt

As for the VRO, remove and clean the oil tank out each spring and check the oil lines for cracks or brittleness. Make sure all are tightly secured. Test the low oil sensor in the tank and Make sure the warning horn is working properly. Alot of problems get blamed on the VRO pumps, but they really are more reliable than they are given credit for. A manual will give you all the details you need for testing and service. Do this and set the motor up to run around 5800 at wide open throttle and it will last many, many years....

Rick,

Thanks for that-I posted a new thread-but any idea where to get a manual on-line? And is the Clymers (which I have and seems comprehensive, although somewaht generic and not motor specific) or the Seloc OK or should I get the Johnson manufacturer's service manual?

Thanks
Matt
