Because seals work in two directions not one. You can suck in water and still retain it under pressure, just like you can loose oil but intake no water. If you dont have the tools to shim a rebuild, you cannot rebuild it yourself and have it last more than a few minutes.

fpctim,
You can rebuild the lower unit but one of the speciality tools you'll need is a thrust bearing shim gauge. This is a OMC tool. Your best bet would be to get a manual and have a look at it before you start and see what's involved.

c/6

Hooty

There are two Service Bulletins on shimming this gear case, SB 2224 dated April 1990 changed the collar on the shimming tool, new collar is pn 328361. Service Bulletin 2200 dated Feb 1988, you have to id the gearcase by looking at cavity farward of the driveshaft seal housing, and shim according to the stamped mark. The drive shaft was made larger, a production change I think, when you buy waterpump kit comes with 2 different impellers for the 2 sizes of drives shafts. The drive shaft was changed because of breakage.

If you can find an OMC mech., you may get him to shim it for you with his gauge and you do the rest.

c/6

Hooty

Ask Joe Reeves to do it for you, may be only 1 1/2 hours from you, and have some of the parts you need.

I appreciate the compliments my friends but I no longer have that specific tool. I should think that there must be at least one Evinrude/Johnson mechanic in Orlando that would shim that shaft for a reasonable fee. Shouldn't take more than a half hour..... a hour tops.

Re: 1987 50hp johnson lower unit problems

I called up my mechanic and he said that if someone is fixing it them selfs they have to pay double for special services? is'nt there something illegal about that? but if it is not I quess I would do the same thing too if I were a mechanic! today more and more people are fixing thier own engines!

Sloopy Doopy, think about your comment for a minute. If everyone used a mechanic only for a special tool, would they be able to make a living? Its the same as asking a mechanic to diagnose a motor problem for you so you can leave and fix it yourself. That simply does not compute. Why would anyone expect a career mechanic to do those things? They invest much money and time in training and are not in the business of cutting their own throats. Many here give advice because they're nice guys and enjoy conversation of the subject, but asking them to physically do part of the job for you to save a buck is crossing the line.

Go to www.am-tech.org, click on tech roster. You will see a list of names of techs, by state and city. There are about 10 in your area. One of these may have the tool. It is also inportant that he have the two service bulletins 2200, and 2224 to get the correct shimming.
