I am having an issue with my timing of my 125hp. I have followed the manual exactly. I have set my cranking timing to 28 degrees. When I put the plugs back in and set it up for a water wot to make sure that I am at 30 degrees. It will back fire thru the exhaust during start. I have rechecked my timing multiple times. It seems to me that the timing is to advanced and needs to be retarded a little to prevent the back fire. any suggestions??? The carbs are set up per the manual as well as the tower and all other adjustments.

When you do the static timing? Do you advanve the throttle all the way?
It needs to be fully advanced.
Backfire could be too much gas in the system.
Check the diaphram in the fuel pump.

When I did the static timing I did have the throttle advanced to full and it in the gear. I made sure that the tower was fully advanced. Neutral safety switch was by passed. I will check the fuel diaphragm. I know it is a new one, but it wont hurt to check.

Are you choking it to cold start? If you try to start without choke and/or if you don't have the control handle in fast idle/warm-up, the engine will be unhappy and yes, may express itself by backfiring.

Watch the tutorial video in the FAQs sticky.

I do choke the carbs during start. I counted the teeth on the flywheel starting from 0 degrees. After counting and dividing by 360. I determined the number of degrees it needed. I came up with 27 degrees. I had my employee which is a certified marine mechanic double check my work. He agreed. So i retarded the timing by one degree and she started and purrs like a kitten. I then performed wot in the tank and idle timing. both were right on the money.
