1986 yamaha 50ELJ quit running

I was full throttle across the lake today and it was running great, then it started bogging down and running kinda rough. It stalled when I put it in neutral and when I tried to start it again, it would start for a second and die. And when I try starting again, I hear what sounds like a short and it won't even turn over. If I wait a while it will start for a second and die and then the "short" sound again.
