My neighbors port side Volvo Penta 235 I/O engine will not go over 3000 RPM. The boat was in storage for the winter, and was put in the water last week. When we got to 3000 RPM and hit some choppy water, the port engine would go from 3000 rpm to 2000 rpm, to 1500 rpm back to 2000 rpm and back to 1500 rpm.

We ran the boat from idle up to 3000 rpm 3 times, 2 of the times we would get the same results as above, the 3rd time the port engine cut out, but starts with no problems and runs up to 2500 RPM with no problems.

Would this indicate a fuel flow problem? Any simple things to check, clean carbs with carb cleaner, check fuel filters?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Jack

I have a similar problem. Did you figure out the solution to your problem? If so, I would like to hear it.

check for a finger filter screen in the fuel pick up tube in the gas tank. coarse mesh screen but get clogged up none the less. believe its function is to protect the check valve at the top of the fuel tube. remember the G.M. tea bags in the fuel tank? fred
