I have a 15' Starcraft runnabout that I'm hanging a 2009 75hp E Tec on. This motor seems huge next to the 86 Merc. 45/50 that it was originally powered by. Best I can figure it will add about 75 pounds out back. I'm a little worried about how this will affect a boat this small. The boat is rated for 80hp. Any thoughts about proping for this combination would be helpful. Thanks,CDD

A 1980s era 75hp Johnrude weighed in around 250. Pretty sure a Merc 80 of that era weighed a bit more being a 4-cylinder. So, your 325 lb. Etec isn't quite so bad... Make sure the transom is solid with no rot or seperation issues.

Re: 1986 Starcraft Re-Power

Thanks for the input. The new E TEC was on and running this past Tuesday. You were right the weight was no big deal, but the performance jump was huge. I mean to the point of being a little frightening. This hull was likely intended to run 35 perhaps 40 at WOT. With a 21 pitch the dealers tec was running 52mph on the gps. Could not compare to the speedo. as it tops out at 45. Dealed said these units will run over the wot of 5500rpm with no problem but with the high torque of these motors you should never have reason to. Slight under statment on his part. I've had it out three times and while a 21 pitch sounded a little overkill to me at first, I found that at 31mph at 3000 rpm the fuel econ. was very good. Much better than the old 45/50., but that was the real goal anyway. This boat is in near new condition so hull and trans. were a non issue (this confirmed by dealer prior to installation). The biggest drawback to this whole project thus far has been the curiosity and peeking at the boat launch. It seems Old (but mint) plus a high tec back side all in one rig is more interesting than one would think. If I can get one of the kids to help, I'll try to put up a picture. Again thanks for the feedback. CDD
