I replaced the lower transmission cable on a 1986 OMC cobra drive 4.3L, but could not get the drive back in when I was done. I had to loosen the engine from the mounts to install the cable because the motor position put to sharp of a kink in the cable to install it. Now I can' get the lower unit to go back in. I'm thinking the alignment may be out. The u-joint housing area doesn't want to fit through the main seal.Does anyone have experience getting the unit through the seal and aligning this unit? I just learned that I needed to have it in gear inorder to turn the shaft to fit, but I don't think I even got the spindle to that point because of the problem of fit where the black rubber boot seal hits the housing that is around the u-joints. There is an alignment tool, I wonder if I need to install with one of these, and if so how much they cost. Perhaps it will be more cost effective to have a marine shop do it, if that is the case?

If you have the drive off you definately an alignment tool to check the alignment.

Looks like this.

Without an alignment bar and getting the alighment Just Right you can expect to have to pull the engine soon to replace that $350 coupler.
