Welcome to iboats.

Parts availability is good. They're good motors except for one quirk. They run on 2 cylinders at idle and all 4 at full throttle. Between 1800 and 2400 RPMs they can't seem to decide whether to run on 2, 3, or 4 cylinders. Keeping a constant speed in that range is difficult to impossible. On planing boats, that's about where the boat would be plowing thru the water anyhow. Most people don't run there. More RPMs and you'll probably be on plane. Fewer and you won't. It becomes a problem on pontoon boats that can be operated at any RPM because they never plane. No big deal, that can be overcome by speeding up or slowing down a tad. It's worse for waterskiers. Slalomers will be fine, but beginners and wakeboarders usually run at sub-planing speeds, so this quirk presents a definate challenge to the operator in this situation.

For info on the value of any part of the package, look here...
http://www.boats.com/index.jsp?src=header_home

I have one of these and I quite like them except as mentioned before, it's near impossible to keep a constant speed near the 2000rpm.
I think having the carb cleaned and set up probably help, but only use an old merc mechanic, the first merc guy I used said 2 of my 4 cylinders didn't work!!!! When I told him it's a 2+2, his reply was 'Never heard of it' 'You must have been had.' Needless to say he hasn't been back since.

Another thing I don't like it, is it's fuel consumption, it's very high, but then again it's a big old block.

WillyB, I thought that that 2/3/4 feature was new on the 1988's. Perhaps I'm mistaken.
