I just purchased a used 1986 Smoker Craft with a 1986 Mercury 50 hp.
Ser# A925548

How do I determine the model?

Also the motor needs a lower unit rebuild, I can buy a reman for about the same as it would cost me for just the parts.

If there is good compression are these motors reliable and worth spending $1000.00 to get the lower unit fixed.

Or should I shop around for a used motor?

Thanks from a new guy.

Hi!

Find the serial number, usually on the transom mount area of the engine, then go to the internet or buy a repair manual from Mercury.
If the compression is even for all cylinders and at least above 100 psi, then I would take a chance on a lower unit.

A925548, as far as I can find at the moment, is closest to 1986 2 cylinder, 35 HP

For 1000 bucks you should be able to buy 2 running engines. Why not a parts engine with a bad powerhead for a couple of hundred and then just change out the foot? Its not a hard project. Check craigslist. The serial number is also stamped on the top front of the powerhead.

Re: 1986 Mercury 50 hp motor questions.

Crem1, thanks for your replies. This is the info I have found as to what year and size the motor is.

Your MERCURY Selection:
50 (3 CYL.)
.... Ser # 6428681 THRU 0B122929...

Got it from usboatsupply, I was wondering what model it is. I have seen reference to Classic, Thunderbird, Black Max etc. that is why I was asking about the model.

Thefairlaneman, I will check craigslist but there aren?t a great number of boaters locally. I will check the surrounding area though; I would love to find one with a bad power head for a couple hundred.

Has this particular model motor historically been a reliable motor?

Thanks Jeff
