New to site, thanks in advance. I've got a 1986 Larson with a Mercruiser 185 V6. I got the boat ready for the summer and took it out for the first time a few weeks ago. The boat was a little sluggish out of the hole and didn't feel quite right. After about 10 minutes of cruising, the engine began to pop or backfire and lose power. When I got it home, I checked the timing and found it was pretty far off. I set the initial timing as the manufacturer specified and took it back out. The boat will jump out of the hole like a monster now.

problem is, it still does the popping or backfiring after a short time of running. When that happens, I can back off the throttle and go really slow (no wake speed) for a few minutes and back on it. After a few minutes, it's back to popping. All of this is also dependent on how many people are in the boat. My wife and I can go for a while before the problem happens. If there's a lot of people in the boat, it happens right away and the boat has almost no power. As soon as I try to throttle up with a heavy load of people, it just pops and shudders. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Sounds like a plugged up carburetor. Typical '85 boat didn't have a fuel water separator inline, if yours does, dump it into a clear container and see if there is any crud in it. Might be time for a carb rebuild kit and filter check on your fuel system.

The catb was rebuilt and a fuel water separator was installed. The fuel looks clean at the filter and the screen at the carb is clean.

cod I have an issue with the Thunderbolt breakerless timing relay? I've double checked everything else on the ignition system but I know very little about that unit. I read somewhere that it could get hot internally under a load and fail. This could explain why it only happens after running for a while.

I think its a fuel pump issue. Could also be a restriction in the fuel supply system (tank, antisiphon valve, filter)

Test the supply pressure, should be 4-7 psi
