1986 mercruiser cooling system question

When I got my boat from my father in law this past November the wiring was shot (and still is, but in the works) and the strainer for the inlet water was removed. My question is, Do I really need the strainer? Most of the newer boats do not have them. I work with mercruisers all the time on customer boats and they do not have them. Any input would be appreciated.

Ayuh,.... What motor,..?? What drive,..?? Which strainer,..??

86 5.7 260 HP mercruiser with the alpha one out drive. As far as the strainer goes I'm not sure what brand but I do know its a raw water strainer. I will get a picture of it today and try to get it uploaded on here for you to see.

Ayuh,... In it's stock form, yer motor, 'n drive is cooled by the raw water pump in the lower unit, 'n it's strainer is along it's sides, above the prop shaft housing...

So,.... Donno what yer lookin' at....

I would replace the sea strainer, i just had to flush the seaweed out of an engine oil cooler because it dident have a strainer.
