I am looking for a little more performace out of my engine. It has slow accelertion, seems to die out in a turn, spits and spudders at WOT. The guy a bought the boat from installed a universal electric fuel pump in place of the original pump. Could this be cause the problem? Also it will not idle for more the a min or two. what could cause that. It seems like it is starving for fuel. any help would be real nice.. That tach does not work at this time so i have no idea what the rpms are at while running it.

In reality, the carb rebuild can be done by any experienced auto mechanic. My Mercruiser 470 Rochester carb used a kit off a 1967 Chevy Impala 307 cu V8.

Not all 140's have the old Rochester carb, however. I'd suggest going thru IBoat.com and get a real Mercruiser carb kit.

As far as the electric fuel pump: I would go back to the factory mechanical fuel pump. Certain items designed for marine use are best used in boats. An enclosed engine cover doesn't have the air flow that an automobile has under the hood--could pose a danger.

By the way, all 4 cylinder I/O's are pretty slow coming out of the hole. They will run plenty fast in mid range and high rpm's, however. There's really not much you can do--other than keep the engine in good shape and start off with the power trim all the way down. A set of Smart Tabs would help you plane off quicker and your engine would pull like it has more horsepower. That's about it.

Re: 1986 mercruiser 140

Removed my carb off my 87 3.0l Mercruiser for the last time I hope 130hp and ran good still but when i rebuilt carb I didn't get the right accelerator pump and the shaft came loose /out and it didn't squirt when putting the throttle down it didn't slow down just a little hesitation most of problem was mechanical fuel pump so I rebuilt and cleaned anti-siphon valve twice .P.S tried clean carb a couple times . Dont know anything about little 4cyl ford Industrial /marine engines but i;m still kicking my self for not buying a little tugger that had the carb I needed for my McCullough 2 stroke 100ci 4cyl drone engine .
