I have a 1986 Johnson 90hp outboard and the tilt suddenly stopped working. When I go to tilt the engine up or down there is a quiet ticking noise coming from the little black relay box on the back of the engine. Would it be safe to say that I have a bad relay? Any troubleshooting suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

bad relay, corroded wires/connections/contacts not allowing enough current to operate tilt/trim, or dead/dying battery. Sounds like it wants to work...

Thank you. Brand new battery, all connections look good with no corrosion. I will try and replace the relays. Thanks for you're help!

I had same problem and tapped on relay while pushing button and it worked. Like the other person said check connectors and wiring. I had relay problems.
