I have a 1986 Johnson 150 VRO that ran great all summer. This fall the engine would leak oil when it was tilted out of the water. It seems to run fine except for this. I checked all the hoses to and from the VRO and they do not appear to be leaking. When I removed the carb cover, there was oil in the bottom of it. Strangely, it appears to be oil and not gas and oil mixed. Any help would be appreciated.

When you tilt a motor , fuel leaks out of the carburetors.----Just the nature of it.-----Gasoline evaporates and a smidgen of oil remains.

There are hoses in the bottom of the air box that channel this oil back into the crank on my little 70, probably something similar on the 150 that has come loose.

It was more than a small amount of oil, probably more like 4oz or so. I'll check the return hose to see if it has come loose.

Were you running the engine out of gas before tilting it up? If so this would be the reason for all the oil.

No, it happened the last couple of times I used it. Seems to run fine and didn't smoke excessively

If it's still running the VRO check all those hoses for leaks. 4 oz is a lot of oil just from evaporation.

I'll check the hoses. I also have some black oil coming out of the exhaust port and the prop, could that just be from the fogging oil when winterizing? Totally different color than the blue 2 cycle oil.

normal.

As far as the silencer getting a quater cup of oil in it- might you have been tilting engine higher? If this just started happening something may be a little out of whack. For example, you could have a float that is just a little heavy or out of adjustment, not bad enough yet to cause a running issue but on its way.

Probably the air box gaskets leak that's why you are seeing it. 4 oz is not a lot just because the carbs drain out when you tilt it. The airbox gaskets will leak over time. When you have the airbox off check the return hoses make sure they are not plugged up.
