look for some help here guys. I have a 1986 Johnson 150 currently has 9 amp charging system. I would like to upgrade to 35 amp. I ive in South Florida with lots of access to used old motors. I am going to change the flywheel and regulator to the 35 amp output. Is there anything else I need?? also can anyone tell me what year and horsepower will fit my motor (175? 200? etc for the flywheel). Need the additional amp due to running bait pumps, radar electronics etc.. Thank you in advance for you help

You will need the flywheel, stator and rectifier off a 89-91 or 92 150-175hp crossflow engine. You will also have to rewire the stator charge coil wiring to match your power pack

Re: 1986 johnson 150 charging system upgrade

The 35 amp system came out in 84. There are two types of 35 amp systems and two different flywheels. The 89 and later models (with the single power pack and have quick start) use a different flywheel-not interchangeable/compatible with the older ones. If you change to this later system, you will need to check your ignition wiring harness, as you will need to convert your engine from a double pack to a single pack harness.
