Are these good engines? I'm looking at a boat that has this engine on it and I want to make sure I get a good deal. Lower unit was rebuilt 1 1/2 years ago and carbs have also been worked on in the past few years.

I'm told the motor runs great as well. I plan on doing a compression test when I go look at the boat, but want to know what to watch out for.

Thanks in advance....

Re: 1986 Evinrude XP-150

We have a 1990 150XP. That's a fast engine. We got 100lbs compression on all cylinders.

Ours has a fast idle. Can't get it below 1100 in neautral. We will have it worked on soon. That's an isolated problem.

If it hasn't been abused it should run great, but it will burn gas. Man will it burn gas.

I think they are vary good. They come out of the hole above avg. And have good top end. find out all you can before you buy/they do use a lot of fuel, but they make a lot of power with it.Just run it before U buy it.

Re: 1986 Evinrude XP-150

Thanks for that info, it is very helpful. I'll take my compression gauge along and see if I can get some readings on it. Hopefully I have the correct adapters.

I want an engine that will pull a skier well and it sounds like this one will. Like I said the lower unit was rebuilt and the carbs have been gone over and the guy is going to take me out in it, when I go look at it. So it sounds like if it has good compression and runs well, it should be good to go.

Where should these normally idle at?

Not to highjack my own thread, but...

I'm sure you know, but that fast idle problem is probably the low speed setting on your carbs and/or an air leak somewhere. At least that's what I've found working on my Jet ski 2-stroke's.

How many carbs are on these engines? Personally, I would somewhat find it hard to believe the low-speed settings all got messed up, unless someone messed with them, so I'd look more for an air leak. I'm not a mechanic, but I have rebuilt several 2-stroke motors and could tell you how to leak test a motor, if you mess with this stuff yourself.

In any matter...Good Luck! Do you already have a thread about this??
