I have a 1986 Evinrude 225 hp. It won't shift into reverse. I adjusted the cable on it and that worked for only a few days on the water, then it went back to doing the same thing, chattering inside the shift handle up by the steering handle. If i take the cover off of the engine and shift it manually , that works. So i'm wondering if the cable might be messed up. We also found were the cable hooks up to a horizontal shaft, that it was just sliding on there and we had it tack welded to fix it and that eliminated the sliding on there, but it wouldn't go into reverse still. Does anyone have any ideas what might be the problem. I appreciate the time. Thanks Mitch Kruger
