I just rebuilt my 1986 evinrude. It ran great till it at the #5 and 6 cylinders. I had the block bored 20 over and i rebuilt it. It starts and runs smoothly, but i have a few problems.

First is dieseling. For some reason, the engine diesels. I set the timing to what the service manual states and it continues to diesel. on top of that, i retarded the timing 4 or 5 degrees and it still diesels. any suggestions?

the second is now i am getting a pulsing horn warning. now i cannot find my manual so i am not 100% sure what it is. i believe my model has a constant warning for Temp, and fuel pressure. I know there are a few others, but i am not sure what they are. The engine does NOT go into SLOW mode, so i am not sure if it is oil pressure. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. I put a lot of time an $$ into this baby, and i want it to work right. I also dont want to have to rebuild it again.

thanks
Dave :)

1986 did not have S.L.O.W. The four wire VRO no oil signal is continous short pulses,I assume you replace the VRO with new one. The low oil in take is short pulses every 20 seconds. Do you mean it diesels, when you turn off key engine still runs on 3 cylinders? If so you have bad power pack.

Re: 1986 Evinrude 150 warning horn

Hey, thanks for the reply. For your info, the I had to temporarily disconnect the low oil sender in the VRO tank because it is bad. There is plenty of oil in the tank (1/2 full). Also, the warning horn just sounds on and off continuously, no 20 second intervals. When i turn the engine off and restart. The horn comes back on after a few minutes of running.

The engine continues to run after i turn the key off. Could one of the power packs not be grounding the ignition properly??? before the rebuild, i had no such problems. when the key was turned off, the engine stopped.

Thanks
dave :)

The black/yellow stripe wire from pack is he kill wire, you should be able to jumper this wire to engine block and stop engine, if not pack is bad. You should also run 25/1 in tank until you solve VRO problem. 50/1 mix normal plus 50/1 for break in, makes 25/1. The alarm is giving a no oil being pumped signal.

Re: 1986 Evinrude 150 warning horn

Hey clanton, I want to thank your for your help. As it turns out, My VRO primer bulb check valves were clogged. No oil could pass throught them. I replaced the bulb and there seems to be plenty of oil getting to the pump. i am no longer getting the warning from the oil system.
As for the dieseling, i found, with the help of a timing light, that on my starboard powerpack, the black and yellow wire has a bad connector. The motor dies immediately when the two connectors are pushed together.

Looks like i got away cheaply this time...
thanks though
dave
