I want to put a tachometer on the boat I just bought. My question is: how many poles on the Suzuki alternator?? I see that the marine tachs come marked for various numbers such as 4-8-12-20. Which one so I need and how do I hook it up ?? Is it the yellow wire ?? Thanks.

Re: 1986 DT-85 tachometer question

I'm working through this, too, with a 1998 DT85.

The service manual says the rotor has 6 poles. I don't know if that means the alternator has 12. The charts I've looked at say that the setting should be 6 on the back of the tach.

The guage wire is the yellow one, for sure, but I'm not sure exactly which yellow lead to use... I only see a free yellow lead by the throttle remote.

I've asked a similar question in another thread.

I think I found the info I need. It looks like they are 8 pole alternators. Anyone know if this is correct ??
