1986 boat 1971 outboard johnson 50 hp..help on hooking up steering

I have a 1986 eagle 15 foot bass boat... i just bought a 1971 50 hp johnson for it..my steering cable doesn't work what do i need to do..I am new to this expensive hobby not sure what will work and what will not any sugestions?

Why doesnt you steering work? What is it doing or not doing?

my problem was that on the 1971 model the steering cable doesn't go through the transom mount.. but i went to the marine place today and bought an assembly that you bolt to your boat . they said it would work
