does not seem to charge battery. all that is hooked up to engine battery is a depth finder. 11.7 at battery and start up at 2000 rpm is 11.9. at 4-5000 it gets to 12-12.1 shouldnt it reach at least 13.5?

Do a test on your rectifier between the 3 wires if there is a significant difference in the ohm test i think more than 0.25 between any 2 readings [double check in your manual for the reading ] then the diode is gone.

Before getting too involved, try either another meter OR test your meter on another know good battery to see what it reads. That way you rule out a suspect low meter reading before tearing into your charging system...
