1st problem, no spark, I replaced trigger, cdi box, stator, and plugs.
Took to shop to get it timed, they timed it but could only keep it running by pulling choke. They cleaned and rebuilt carbs. Now they say it runs if throttle is above idle. When they retard to idle it dies. They said the reeds are bad on crankshaft. Any thoughts?

Welcome to iboats

While it could happen, the Reeds on these engines rarely fail.
Sounds like they don't know how to adjust the Timing and/or Sync on these engines.
This is a 36 yr old engine, it can become a Money Pit, as the price of the parts you have already replaced cost more than the engine is worth on the market.
Just to warn you, on this engine, the crankcase has to be split to access the Reeds. A lot pricey labour, great for the shop, but not for you

That was my feeling about carbs.
