I have replaced the coils on this 35 Hp Mercury and the #2 coil is still not firing. I have tested the green and white wire going to the coil and it has fire, but no fire going to the spark plug. The spark plug wire checks good also. I am testing the wires with a timing light. the timiing seems to be set at about 7 before TDC. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

So hold up, the coil is not firing, or the plug is not firing? Are you using a known to be good spark plug? You can hold the plug about 1/4" away from the block and if you see a strong blue spark whilst trying to crank the motor then you are getting good spark. You have replaced both coils?

I have put new coils on and new plugs in. I get fire to the coil. When I check for fire in the plug wire I get none. I swapped plug wires with #1 and plug wire checks out ok but still no fire out of #2 coil.

Hmm, that is tricky.

Yes it is. I am checking out different things and right now this is the status. I get fire in both coil wires coming from the switch box. Green/yellow goes to #1 coil Green/ white goes to #2 coil. both have fire while engine is running. #1 spark plug wire is firing #2 is not. Do you think I need to pull flywheel and check the stator magnets? Thanks for your input it greatly appreciated.

I'll try to walk you through this. It'll take a couple of posts. Remove plugs from engine, ground out plugs Swap coil leads at switch box or at coils. Check for spark with timing light while cranking, where is spark now?

can you try swapping the coils....bad coil right out of the box is rare...but it can happen. If you get fire from the second coil placed in first coil position then you know its further up the chain. I am new at this just working it out same way you probably are. Good luck

Ok Here is what has been done. I swapped the #2 new coil out and put old coil from #1 on the #2 side. Then I put the new #2 coil on #1 side. The new #2 coil checks out fine. #2 is still not firing. I aslo removed the plugs and with a timing light the fire is going to the plug on #1 but nothing on #2.

I'm confused by your last post. Did you hook the timing light up to the plug wires with the plugs removed? If so, the timing light shouldn't work, because there is no ground and therefore no current being passed.

Okay, that basically rules out coil and mechanical problem. Keep plugs out, swap trigger leads at switch box (should be brown/yellow, brown/white wires) and check for spark again while cranking. Where's spark now?

The only time I get a spark on #2 plug is when I let off the switch while starting the motor.I get one blip and that it.

If the plugs are grounded, like I told him to, the timing light will work

going to have to make a jumper. brown/yellow and brown/white won't interchange, bullet plugins won't swap male to male ect

Starting to sound like a switch box failure

ok I get fire to #2 plug and not #1 plug when I swapped the wires going to the switch box coming from the part that has a linkage, I don't know what to call it, an advance maybe, its under the flywheel and hooked to a linkage that moves with the throttle.

That's the trigger. Are the wires to the coils in the original positions, if so sound's like you have a trigger problem. I would verify with dva readings as per cdi manual.

Yes all coils and wires are back in place, put both new coils back on. Plugs are in and only firing on #1 coil.
