1986 15hp waterpump question?

Hey guys. I am new to boat motors and just bought a 1986 15hp evinrude motor. Just got it runnin today after a carb. rebuild. My question is exactly how much water should be coming out of the pee hole. I have only a light mist coming out. Should there be a steady stream of water coming out or is this mist what should be expected. I know I should replace the water pump anyway since the motor sat for a few years. Just wanted to know how much water should be coming out of the pee hole to be considered in good condition?

You are right. If it has been sitting, replace the impeller and thermostat. You should get more than a mist out of it.

I have an 84 9.9 and with a new pump, it puts out a steady but not forceful stream at idle. At higher RPM's, it really pumps out a strong stream.

Ok. So is there a difference in a impeller and a water pump. And what exactly comes in a water pump repair kit?

The impeller is the pump and I like to use the factory BRP pump kits. I have read that Sierra makes a good kit also. The repair kit contains everything you need to return the pump to as new condition. The kits are not hard to install, but a service manual would certainly be helpful.

The impeller is the movin part of the pump assembly.Imn most cases you need only chnge the impeller.Unless the motor was run through alot of sand,which causes wear inside the pump,or a bad overheat,you will probably just need an impeller.That perticular impeller often wears out and will sooner or later fail.You can take the lower unit off,removing the 6 mounting screws AND taking out the lower shift connecter screw ,which will only be seen after all mounting screws are removed and the lower unit drops less than an inch,leaving an access opening for removal of the shift screw. Dont try to force the lower unit apart more than the inch,it wont drop entirely until the shift screw is removed
