Hey guys, just wondering if 5000 rpm is ok at wot for 86 120 Evinrude looper. I hit about 40-42 mph but keep hearing that this motor should be running at least 5500. I don't know what prop is on this thing "yet" new to me. Any thoughts.

Thanks

Re: 1986 120 evinrude, 5000 RPM wot

I have an '85 Evinrude 140 and my owners manual which covers 120 & 140 models says on the spec. page:
"Full throttle Operating Range....5000-6000 RPM"
"Horsepower.......120 at 5500 RPM"

My 140 tops out at 5200 RPM on my boat.

Your prop may have to much pitch. Find out what you have and let us know.

Make sure you're motor height, trim and loading of gear and people is good before playing with the prop pitch. No need to spend money for no reason.
You need to achieve at least 5,500 rpm at WOT.
My 2 cents.
