Thanks for this forum! After a search on here I will post thiS . Just got a 1986 115HP Mercury , I was told by the former owner that he forgot to mix the oil in the gas, and limped home on 2 cyls. I bumped the key and it turned over.Opened it up and there is about half a tank of oil! Got it home and hooked to the flush muffs and it started within 5 or 6 cranks. This is where I get concerned, Absolutley no smoke? Sounds great, shut it down went to start again and bendix wasnt working fixed that and bumped up the throttle, no start. Back to neutral and started right up, smoked for a second then again no smoke? This is a 2 stroke and should make smoke right? I will be doing a compression test on Tue and will post the results. Thanks for any assistance

Confused....If engine has oil tank it would not need to have oil mixed with gas. Explain.

Is engine 4 or 6 cyl. If 1986 it would not have oil injection and it would be 6 cyl.

There was an auto-blend sytem in the 80's. Take it OUT OF THE BOAT and pre-mix the gas at 50/1.

Do a compression test to see if it got hurt.

-W

There is a tank and pump on the starboard side of the engine, 6 cyl inline. What has concerned me is that the guy said he didnt mix oil, as if he was premixing it not knowing there was oil injection was doing it.It is not smoking at all except when you have givin it throttle before starting, then only for a few seconds . compression test in the AM.Im gonna pull the hose off of the oil pump and see if its working, may even yank it just for good measure. thanks for the help

Listen to clams!!! Ditch the oil tank and go with a Good 50:1 TCW-3 pre mix. With todays oil you don't see hardly any smoke. Tim

Inline Mercury Sixes didn't come from the factory with an oil tank or oil pump built into the motor. Pre-mix or the special tank mentioned.

Are you sure of what you really have? Have you removed the cowling and counted the # of spark plugs? The only M-115 I know of with an internally-mounted oil tank is the 4-cyl model.

If you list the model/ser # info we may be able to help further......ed

Ok pulled the cowling off and its a 4 cyl , sorry!compression is from top cyl down 120 115 120 120.I checked the oil pump and it seemed to be in op ,so I am now removing the lines and capping, that is what I should do right?! The serial number is not readable on the tag, The starter is marked in white with 10 10 88. carbs haave WME on them and the plugs I pulled are NGK BP8H-N with a 10 directly below it.

With the year at first in question, your oil advice is now suspect. The earlier Auto-blend systems are suspect. Yours however, being the modern type is usually very reliable. You should clean the lines and then reassemble.

THEN Mix oil in the gas anyway at 50/1 AND run it with oil in the oil tank too. Yes, it well be getting a lot of oil if it's working - that won't hurt it.

You'll be able to tell if the system is working because the tank level will go down in proportion to gas burned. Once you're convinced it's working you can stop adding the "insurance oil" to your gas. If you determine it's not working - then you can plug it off and remove it.

You're back to the beginning.

-W
