Hi Guys..

I'm a long time lurker, always been able to find answers without having to post anything.. but this one is getting the best of me..

My 1985 OMC 350 with Stringer outdrive needs a little love :)

I'm trying to replace the entire outside (trailor) trim assembly today.. and ran into a little problem..

1) i cant get the rod to budge, and i cant get to the trim motor...

Am i going to have to pull the outdirve or motor for this? the rod with (what i call) "spin gears" that connects to the motor is pretty well stuck.. it may be because i've not pulled the motor yet, but i was under the impression that it should slid out of the back of the assembly..

any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated..

thanks

-Steven

You are talking about the TILT motor I am assuming as the trim motor runs a pump to the rams on the front motor mounts. There are a few different tilt motors. If you cannot reach it from the inside (they are never easy) you may just pull the transom seal and get at it this way. You need a diagram of the tilt system. There are many plastic washers in there and it needs all of them to function properly. Also due to it's poor design it is something you should service often. Drain the water out and replace with oil every trip or 2.

One motor bolts to the flange with the bolts that hold the motor together (PITA).
The other has a flange and shorter bolts and is easiest from the outside of the transom.

Thanks.. Maybe my terminology isnt correct in saying "outside Trim" or "Trailer trim" :) I'm not a mechanic, but i do like to DIY :)

when you say there are a few different tilt motors, does that mean that there are different options, or multiple motors to replace?

I did look from inside the boat, and i couldnt even get my eyes on the lower part of the opening in the transom..
my transom seal has some MAJOR GOO sqished in all around it.. i'm assuming to improve it's water-proof-ness.. so taking that seal off is going to be quite difficult..

Servicing often, can i just loosen the bottom screw and let it drain, then remove the screw on the outside and insert gear oil? or is there more to it than that?

Been reading hundreds of threads about this same problem..
but they all start like this one and end with "its still broke, i'll keep trying" LOL

thats not a very good omen LOL

I'm going to try to reach down to take the TILT motor off this afternoon.. here's hoping that i can get to it..

well, i cant get to the bottom bolt on the Tilt motor.. GRRRRR...

My trim pump doesnt work either (which i've never cared about because the boat performs well on the water)...
but today, i needed to raise the motor a few inches to get my hand under there..

is there a way to manually (safely) raise it?

I'm taking it to the marina in a couple days to fix the trim i guess..

but I'M SOOOO CLOSE!! it's so frustrating to see what i need, and not be able to get to it..

Re: 1985 OMC Stringer Trim Assembly & Motor Replacement

We just pulled the tilt motor on my dads' "new" OMC this weekend. It was a PITA but we were finally able to get a socket on the bottom bolt and remove the tilt motor. It is a long reach from inside the boat with a long extension on the socket. We are dealing with a four cylinder though so we probably have more room than you do. We need to replace the spring in the coupler but at least the motor runs now when it's supposed to instead of just hearing the solenoid click.

For mine, it's easier to take off my rear seats and dog house to get enough room to reach the tilt motor. I've got the I6 Chevy, and don't really ever need to mess with the trim to reach the tilt. It's a real rib buster though.

I've heard of a few people going through their seal to get it, but that's never worked for me so I leave it on.

I've got the rear seat out on the side by the tilt motor.. still cant get to the %@(#**(! thing.. If i could get an extra inch under it i could get it.. I'm taking my boat to the marina to get them to fix the trim, so that i can fix the tilt..

by the way, if anyone needs the clutch gears i have an extra set..

my 84 stringer was fun as well to pull the tilt motor. Had to remove seats, and still hang upside down in the bilge
