1985 OMC Stringer Grinds into Reverse

When I shift into the idle notch for reverse, I hear a lot of grinding sounds. I have to hammer the throttle down in reverse to get the gears to catch. This is an intermitant problem. Forward seems to work just fine. Any ideas???

Sounds like your shift cable is out of adjustment. Should be a fairly easy fix if you are lucky.

I forgot to mention that when it does that it stresses the shift cable among other things. The cable costs anywhere from $200 to $400 dollars.
