1985 OMC Impeller install

I have removed old impeller cleaned everything installed new plate, impeller, retainer, shaft seal onto drive shaft. I have soaked impeller in vegetable oil but cannot get it to go back into housing i am turn it counter clock wise but the shaft engages gears befor the impeller gets bent into shape please help, this is my first replacement.

use soap detergent. Doesnt matter which way they go in. soon as u start motor they will all be pointing the correct way

the OMC stringer impellers will NOT flip. If you point them backwards, they will stay backwards forever and not pump much water.
I like to use a water based lubricant, although it can cause some odd looks when people see it in my tool box.
Facing the ball gear on the upper on the bench, it turns clockwise. Turn it a bit and that will show you how the water pump shaft turns.
