I just purchased a used boat that has a 1985 Mercury 25hp outboard on it and I have a couple of questions:

1. What is te fuel mix ratio for this motor?

2. Anyone know where I can buy replacement controls for it?

Thanks,
Steve

Thanks for the info!

Do you know if the controls come with cables, harness and instructions?

Hi
The morse control cables are univeral, they just have threaded ends, they are for throttle and shift, you need thread on merc ends at the motor, the control box and wiring will come with instructions. If that 25 merc carb has a brass pin sticking up out of the primer on the side of the carb and it has been sitting around the brass pin may get stuck pushed down, and since it is down you can't see it, and this will make the motor flood. Had lots of fun with this.
Cheers

Thanks. The motor runs great, it has a pull cord on top in addition to the electric start. The problem with the current control box is that the throttle is backwords. What should be wide-open for both forward and reverse is actually slow/idle. The guy who had the boat before me didn't remember what wires went where for the electric start. I tried to figure it out, but nothing I tried seemed to work.

Re: 1985 Mercury 25 hp questions

I have a question or two about my motor.
My motor is on a 16 ft. flatbottom and tops out at around 5 mph. It gets to this speed just before I turn the throttle all the way up. When I max out the throttle the motor will rev up but I get no more power. Is it a problem with the prop or something else?

Thanks for the help!

You need to start your own thread and state specific facts about your engine like the size, year etc. JR

Since those engines have cable corntrols from either the tiller (or the forward corntrol as it appears yers is), I would have someone operate the corntrol and carefully observe the operation at the engine to see if something was hooked up incorrectly when the corntrol was installed. (It may be just improper installation of the forward corntrol.)

Question: does yer engine have a square three position choke knob: and is the kill switch on the starboard side of the power head? (The later models had a round two position choke and the kill switch at the center of the powerhead).

Thanks in advance fer yer answer. JR

Yes, it has the square three position choke. Haven't looked at the kill switch yet.

Next time ya see yer engine it is either at the base of the power head facing the vessel or on the starboard side.

I'd luv ta know either way.

Thanks again. JR

JR -

I finally got down to where the boat is stored at and looked at the engine, sorry it took me so long. I didn't see a kill switch on it. I'm not sure if this matters, but my engine doesn't have a tiller handle on it, it's set up for just the steering controls.

Re: 1985 Mercury 25 hp questions

Does anyone know if there is a kit that can
be installed on a 1985 Merc 25hp to charge
a battery.

I had a 30 Johnson many years back, and was able
to purchase a kit, including the coil to install
under the fly wheel.

Thanks...
