Hi Everyone,
Here is another outboard problem, well host of problems that I would like to share with you as I'm pretty much out of ideas as to what to do. I'm not a mechanic by any means but I'm especially lost when it comes to these motors. So here's the issue(s) we're having with the 200hp outboard:
1. The motor will start just fine on the hose and on water, but will run really rough and buck & snort, almost as if its not running on all 6 cyl.
2. When we accelerate, the motor will hesitate/bog down around 1800-2000rpm and only with patience and very careful throttle control will it creap up on plane and then suddenly increase as normal. (Note if you hammer the trottle like in a water skiing situation, nothing happens, she'll stay bogged at 1800rpm)
3. However, when it finally makes it to 4000rpm and above, the motor will periodically surge between my selected power setting and 3800 rpm. This is especially noticalble when at full speed, it will go to 5500rpm, then suddenly drop to c. 4000, then hammer back up to 5500. Under speed it also smells an awful lot of gas, as if its dumping it back into the water.
So far we've checked the Stator, which is normal on the low speed end and acceptible values on the high speed end. Carbs were pulled off and examined and were clean as a whistle (they had been cleaned 30 hrs ago already). Suspecting something with the fuel system, the fuel pump was examined which was dry on the back when removed and looks brand new. Still haven't examined the check valve system for the fuel supply, mechanic thinks that's where it may be flooding the carbs.
One of the control/switch boxes was changed two years ago when the stator went and took one along with it. The second is still original and wondering if that could be causing something?
Is there something else that you guys would suggest trying?
