My motor started running rough then stalled. I could smell gas so I looked under the cover. I didn't see anything leaking so I turned the motor with the starter and saw gas shooting out what appeared to be the lower Idle Mixture Screw. I never knew this was possible. Does it need a new one or is this because of something else. Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you have a "stuck" float in that carb. The gas is most likely comming out the vent hole which is beside the adjusting needle. You most likely have a piece of trash holding float valve open preventing float from controlling fuel flow. You can most likely take carb apart and blow out with air hose. A rebuild kit would be a good idea while you have it apart. Good luck.

Bob

I had this happen on my 79 115 and it ended up being a bad float had a hole in it. You need to get this fixed soon. I didn't know what it was and tried to keep it running, well I know now that was a expensive lesson learned!

Thanks Bob, That would explain the leak. Tell me, would a stuck float also cause fuel to leak through that vent when you squeeze the fuel line bulb?

Thanks

Hunter,,Yes it would come out of the vent hole,,I am having mine fixed now,,carb overhaul kit,,my float needle valve gets stuck same symptoms,,rough idle,,also more important is it is dangerous,,as mine caused 2 fires on the engine,,one out in the gulf and one at the dock,,I have a 1986 75HP merc not to much difference,,,,get her fixed she will run better and safer,,,Mike
