1985 Merc 115 Running Bad?????

I have a 1985 Mercury 115 ELPT on my bass boat. When I run the motor in forward and reverse with earmuffs on, it runs great. When I put the boat in the water and put it in drive, it stalls out/bogs down. Whenever I go to start it, I have to give it gas to start it up. I can never start it in the upright neutral position. Usually the faster I put it in drive, the more it seems to "catch itself" and run fine. Once I have ran the motor a couple times during an outing, it is much harder to get it to not bog down and die. When I move the forward position up and down really fast, it will then "catch itself" again and run, but I am getting frustrated with having to do that. Wide open throttle runs excellent. I had the carbs cleaned, just but brand new plugs in it, and had compression check. Compression check showed 2 cylinders slightly low, and I mean SLIGHTLY low. Mechanic said it wasn't something he was concerned with because it was basically within the limit of the others. I had some old fuel in the tank when I started the year out and just added to it. I haven't changed the fuel filter yet either. I am thinking 1 of 3 things. Fuel filter needs to be changed, the gas is bad and there is water in the gas, or the idle needs to be adjusted. Any thoughts?????? I was thinking about running all the gas out and putting fresh fuel in and putting in some heet with fuel injector cleaner and putting on new filter. HELP!

That is an inline six motor, right? Those need a fairly rich idle mixture setting to run in gear and accelerate. It is likely your mechanic did not set the idle mixture correctly. Idle speed should be about 900 RPM in neutral, 650-700 in gear.

Fresh fuel will help somewhat. I cannot recommend the heet additive. Do clean the fuel filter.

It would be best if you bought a service manual for that motor. There are adjustments for idle speed, idle pickup timing and max spark advance. A manual will have pictures, which will really help you.

Ok, thanks. My fuel filter is just an in line filter and I ran the boat with muffs on quarter tank tonight for an hour and it still didn't run out of gas. Should I just put more new fuel in it, or is there an easier way to drain it?

It would be best to run and adjust motor on all fresh fuel. If that is not practical, get as much fresh fuel as you can into the tank, or run a remote tank with fresh fuel, just for tuning.

Do I need to tune it in the water? Got as much fresh fuel as possible and put new filter on and ran it on the lake today. Once again, it ran well at first start up and trip. Then every time I started it up and tried to run it, it would bog down and stall unless I pushed the throttle back and fourth, then when coming to a stop, the rpms dropped and engine died.

Yes, carb idle mixture needs to be set in the water, engine warm and in gear at idle. Maybe you should ask your mechanic to set it for you. It would normally been done as part of the tune up you paid for.

Well he only charged me 40 bucks to clean carbs and new plugs. He does engine work on the side not at marina. What makes the issue get worse when I run motor a lot?

So I still have the issue. Any load on the engine makes it stall out. The higher I have it trimmed up, the better it runs it seems. But that makes sense because it has less of a load and is not pushing up against the boat. The starting has gotten bad now too. After first start, it is a pain in the a$s to start. I think on these motors, there is a high and low stator. Could low stator be bad and that's why it runs great at open throttle but stalls when putting in gear? The two cylinders that down 10 percent on compression couldn't be causing the issues because it would run bad ar open throttle too right? The starting and stalling in gear get worse after each trip to different spots on the lake. Found a 88 85hp mariner for 1200 but don't want to dump that into it if I can fix this motor or at least get it running good and reliable for a couple more years. HELP!

Also sounds like some arching going on when running in neutral. Could be just something hard or metal tapping but sounds like spark is jumping somewhere. Need to start it with cover off at night I guess. Could that be causing the issue?
