Engine would not start. When it started it ran great. Slow starter. Replaced 4 coils, starter, and solenoid. Problem still slow turn starter. Tested wires to battery. Voltage drop of 7 volts. Replaced all wires with 2 gauge as was original. Now the boat starts great. It will not accelerate. Before would go to 4500, 5000 rpm. Now full throttle only 3000. Sometimes bogs down when trying to reach the 3000 and quits. Fuel is fresh, mix is correct. I hope it is not the fuel pump but since it was running well before I replaced the parts. I am going to try cleaning the carb jets for the high speed as I do not need to remove the carbs to do this. Could this be the fuel/water separator? Ideas?

Do a cylinder drop test to find out which cylinder is giving you the problem.

with the muffs on I have no issues. Only when in the water. With muffs I can get full revs. In Idle in the water no issues but in gear it bogs down. I will try the drop test in the morning.

On the muffs the blasted thing will run fine on two cylinders. High revs on the muffs mean Nothing. No load. In fact many engines are pooched by revving them up without load. When under real operating parameters, AKA under load, problems will become apparent. It sounds like a dead cylinder. Good(jumps a 7/16" gap) Spark? Fuel getting to all carbs? All carbs clean and float set properly.

I would be interested to see someone clean the 4 orifices in each bowl without removing the carbs...why would you even try?

The 1985 model is the looper design with 4 separate carburetors.----Certainly some jets can be looked at with carburetor installed.

checked compression and was at or near 90 psi on all 4 cylinders. Good spark on all 4 also. I took the boat out yesterday. Full throttle 3000 rpm max. Had to use the throttle quickly from idle to avoid stalling at set off. Needed to nurse throttle up and down to achieve max rpm without bogging down. Next step is to clean high speed jets. Does anyone know a video showing how to remove the air intakes to access the carbs?

Have done a spark test yet? I didn't see where you told us that you have a nice blue spark to all cylinders that will jump 7/16" with an open air spark tester. Not one of the junk ones that just show there is spark in the plastic tube they were built with. You can get one at a parts store for around 10 bucks. If you have good spark pull the carbs and clean all the jets. Better is to soak overnight and blow out with compressed air after you run a small wire through all the jets.

I will try this when Florence stops dropping rain on us here on Long Island. Most likely tomorrow

90 psi? I would check it again with a different gauge.

I am waiting for tonite to do spark and compression tests with a friend as I cannot do them correctly alone. What compression should I look for on this 2 stroke? I have been trying to clean the carbs without removing them. I was told I could access the high speed jets from underneath the air intake by removing a large brass screw to get the jets out. The pictures below show my carbs. I do not have the large brass screw at the bottom of the carbs. Can someone tell me what are the brass tubes in the photos? Are these the jets? Can they be removed?

Ok. Here we go. Checked compression on all 4 cylinders. Within a few PSI of 110 on each. Checked spark and found 1 cylinder had no spark. Redid connections from new coil and it started to spark just beautifully. Now the idle is fine and tomorrow we will take it out in the bay and see how it is under use. Seems to be running better than ever with all new wiring from the batteries, new coils, new starter and solenoid. I will report tomorrow how she does. Thanks for all of your input.

Sorry for the delay in reporting. We were too busy fishing. The engine now runs great. A little rough at idle but takes off beautifully. Ran full out to about 25 mph on the GPS. Got on plane quickly and cut throttle back a bit, remained on plane. Engine ran real well for the last 2 days. I would like to adjust the idle but not sure how. Getting to the carbs is an issue.
Here is a picture of why I was delayed. The Porgies / Scup would not let me post. 4 of us hit our limit yesterday in about 3.5 hours.

Model is J140TXCRD 1984 previous post has pictures of the carbs as I see them and as they look if I take off the air intake which seems to be rather involved
