I am looking at a 1985 Four Winns 190 Horizon w/ the mercruiser 170 motor. What is the displacement of the motor and what outdrives were used with this setup? I hope I am saying this right, completely new at this and trying to find information. Search terms are accepted gladly. The ones I have used did not bring desired results. Possible serial number ranges would also be appreciated.

If the engine is a "V" configuration, it's a 4.3v6 Chevy engine. Like the ones in S-10 pickup. If it's an inline six, its the 292 Chevy.
The drive should be an Alpha one.

It is not a "v" engine. Checking at other web pages, it was mentioned about an inline 4. Does the 170 label indicate horsepower?

Here's a few clues for you on this link:
http://www.marineparts.com/partspages/Gear/gear2.htm
I'd guess you're looking at a 170 hp, inline 4 cylinder with an Alpha Gen 1 outdrive. But I'm not an expert.

If you post this question on the "Mercruiser/Volvo/OMC repair" thread of this forum, some of the mechanics over there will probably have some answers for you.

Inline 4 with 170 horse = Mercruiser 470. This engine is special. Do a search on here, especially under the repair forum. Search for 470, 488 or 3.7 mercruiser. Should tell you all.
