1985 Evinrude 50HP will not reverse

Hi,
I have a friend with a 50 h.p. Evinrude. Last year it stopped going backwards. It had a broken clutch dog. He had a welder repair it. This year it went backwards 3-4 times then no more. He took it apart and nothing looks bad. It is not the cables.
Any ideas? Is there a linkage adjustment in the engine? Is there a lower nend parts blow-up available on line?

i have never worked on any lower units so no im not sure what to tell you. if one of mine goes bad i swap it out. but my motors are from the sixties and seventies and i have some parts motors.
