Starting a removal of the lower unit and ran into a jam. The shift lever bolt is tucked under the bottom carb and is proving near impossible to get at. Have the shop manual, but it shows the engine with the carbs removed. Is the manual trying to say something with a picture and not words?

Ross...use a 1/4" drive with a universal joint on the end and a long extension. Sometimes it helps to remove the starter for easier access.

When you reassemble, a bit of masking tape in the socket to hold the pin bolt will make it easier to get the bolt in.

And shift the lower unit into reverse...this lowers the shift lever in back of the carb so you can get to the bolt.
