1985 Evinrude 50 hp carb help needed

Well, I just got a new motor. The motor looks like it had a pretty rough life. It has 65-75 PSI compression in both cylinders. I'm not sure if i should bother fixing the motor up or not. It does have spark, though.

In an attempt to help clean it up, I started cleaning the carbs up. However, I soon discovered that some idiot took on the welch plugs on the top of the carb off in the past. In effect, he must've punched too far or drilled too far into the idle passage way and then cracking the top of the carb. It will most likely affect the idle negatively.

In essence, I'd like some assistance on finding a carb for this motor. It looks like the 50 and 60hp motors of the same year interchange. Does anyone know what carbs interchange with this motor? Are the 70hp carbs the same? 40-60hp?

Any good outboard salvage yards in Central FL?

i know there are two types one with the red handle type choke and the other type with the butterfly valve choke .
i think yours will have the butterfly type . you can use 40 /45/ 50 / 60 hp twin cylinder carbs
65/ 70 /75 hp carb will fit but i dont know if it runs good with them , you also have to make some minor modifications depending on model.

It uses a primer system for cold start enrichening.

I figure the 3 cylinder motors would have a different sized porting and venturi tubes. Not sure how the 40-60 models compare. I know for the same year the 1985 60hp carb has the same part numbers.

I know it's time consuming but the best thing to do is to go to BRP website, http://shop2.evinrude.com/Index.aspx?s1=lknbvsj92hmjs90v7gn4l722r4&catalog_id=0&siteid=1 and start your search there. Serves 2 purposes. 1 get's you familiar with thier website, 2 get's you used to looking up parts and what's compatable. You will learn much doing this.

Start with your engine and the part you need, pen and paper record part numbers then search years above and below the one you have. Follow along with that part until the numbers change. Sorry but that's the best way to do this.

I've done this already. Only carb it looks like it changes with is the 1985 60 HP

My question is though would a carb with different numbers be the same? like a 1984 50 carb be the same as a 1985 50 carb.

Sorry, not sure which year that they made the switch to VRO but I do believe that's going to limit you. It also appears that about that time they were making a lot of changes to the carbs. I know in the pre VRO engines some used different carbs between the top and bottom yet others uded the same carbs.

Sorry I can't be of more help but I'll try and dig around tonight and see if I can help find anything.

Coolguy, BRP shows 4 different carbs for that engine. 2 different upper and 2 different lower which were used. According to them we need the part number that is stamped into the body to determine which set they used.

Now from what I see the 1985 50hp and 60hp use the same carbs, 2 different upper and 2 different lower. The 1985 55hp uses 1 different upper and lower yet still different part numbers from the 50 and 60hp.

The 1986 50hp uses the same carb top and bottom and the 1984 used 1 different top and bottom and yet again different part numbers.

The 1985 50 and 60hp are VRO the 55hp is not. Which reasons the different carbs there.
All 1984 models are not VRO

Sad to say it looks as though through these 3 model years the carbs are pretty model specific. What exact changes were made? Was it just jetting or was there changes to the throttle linkages?

I can understand that there would be a change from 84 to 85 as they went to the VRO system but why the change between 85 and 86 I don't know. Other than they changed the 60hp from a 2 cylinder to a 3 cylinder in 1986.

That's what I found out too. This is a tough one D: Thanks for your help! I'll get the carb body casting number soon!

this particular carb uses a primer system which is different in the past choke linkage systems.

Re: 1985 Evinrude 50 hp carb help needed

Coolguy, if worst comes to worst I have a dealer near by that's been doing this his whole life and been in the same location for 50 years. Some folks think he's an old fart and hard to deal with but for some reason he takes kindly to me and have given me much free advice and has helped me locate some old NLA parts.

So if still having trouble locating a carb that will work PM me and I'll see what I can find out from him what will work. I'm sure it's a trade secret too!!!!!

Thanks, I'll let you know! I contacted a salvage yard in Clearwater, FL. Hopefully, they'll find the exact carb with the exact casting number so I won't have to worry.

Although, just one question, do all these carbs that have the same linkage interchange? Meaning the only difference between a 40hp carb and 60hp is just jetting? Meaning, the venturi tubes, etc are all the same and the only difference are the jets. Therefore, I could just swap the jets out? If i knew what carbs would interchange then i could narrow down my search. All i could find out on the BRP page is that this carb has the same tag number as a 1985 60 Hp.

Hopefully you will locate a nice used one then you know it's right.

Sorry can't be of much help with determining the difference.
