It died as we came upon plane and has
no spark to plugs. What is the tests to determine what may be wrong?
Motor is in first class shape physically and has had a soft life, never abused or ran hard.

1985Evinrude 28 hp. Start with the basics.
Kill switch?
Loose or broken wiring?
Bad ground wire?
Corrosion?
Blown Fuse?

If these check out, then its time to check the ignition.

I need basics for sure. Which is the power pack? I see the coils are on the rear, and a module to the left of the coils oppsite the plugs.
Is this the power pack? It is about 2" wide and 4" long with a bolt in each end. All this looking at the motor from the rear.
We will try your suggestions and thank you for them.
MAZADO

Hi Mazado

Yep the module to the left is the Powerpack. Start with cleaning all connectors, including the ground which is probably attached to a bolt on exhaust water jacket. Disconnect the kill wire. If you loose spark on both you can have:
bad connections, bad power pack, bad charge coil in stator or bad trigger coil. If you have a manual it is possible to mesure current and resistance in the components, and find the bad one, instead of just buying/swapping parts.

Hi Dane,
Thanks for the help, little by little I will eliminate some of these things. Now I at least
know where the power pack is. It is where I guessed, but need to know.
Thanks
Jim

You will save yourself a lot of pain and probably a dollar or two if you buy an OMC shop and parts manual for your motor. They have step by step "how to's" beyond what you will find here.

Mazado, regarding disconnecting your kill sw wire. If your motor is similar to my 1980 35hp Johnson, out of your powerpack you will see a black and yellow wire that goes off into a round rubber plug with the 2 orange coil wires. If you pull this black and yellow wire out of that plug you can elliminate the kill sw and kill wire in long wire loom from being a suspect problem. Take care pulling this wire out. I had to feed a small pair of tweesers down along side of pin inside plug to release pin from plug. If your engine shows a spark with this wire removed and not touching anything, then your onto the problem.
Dont touch this exposed wire whilst cranking or you will get one big shock.
