I picked this up from a guy who sold it to me as a 1998 15hp Johnson. I think it's more likely a 1985. The plate is missing but I found a number on the mount (10DR1). I need to repair the seals but want to order the right parts. Son is leaving for the Marines and I'd like to get him out on the boat before he leaves. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

google...leeroysramblings....then..outboard motor related articles....9.9/15 hp....you should be able to get close... marineengine.com will have diagrams of your motor and the seals for several year models will be the same

There need to be more model numbers on your ID plate, you just got the first set of 7 ot 8. Go back & look again. From the looks of it I would say it has to be at least a late 1986 or early 87 because of the thermostat location on the upper part of the head.

yep, I certainly owe a debt of gratitude to Leeroy Wisner, along with countless others, for their willingness to share their knowledge and experience

Where else would I look? The tag is gone. All I can find is 10DR1 and 189580 on the mount.

The serial # should be stamped on a welch plug in the block of the motor . It is about the size of a quater , and silver in color. You can use it also to find the parts needed.

BRP customer service may be able to give you the year model from your serial no. < which is what you've posted >

Re: 1985 Evinrude? 15HP?

It's clearly earlier than '93, which is the year they changed from the slanted cowl surface
to one more horizontal. Google "1993 Evinrude 15 hp" in Google Images, and you'll see what
I mean.
However, I just purchased a '92 Johnson, and the motor serial number is G3146646, not all
that much later than your's. It also looks like you have the cable throttle vs the earlier
meshed gears, and that happened about 1986 according to "Leeroys Ramblings". So it looks
like it was built between 1986 and 1992, probably in the early '90's from the serial number
compared to mine.

Evinrude customer service identified my 40hp with just the serial number. Very helpful and obliging when called. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: 1985 Evinrude? 15HP?

BRP gave me the info. G3141256 is the serial number. I have a 1992 15hp Johnson model J15REN.

Thanks everyone! Now for the seals.
