1985 black max lower unit swap

I have a 1985 mercury black max 150hp. Broke the driveshaft. Found another lower unit same number of splines on prop and driveshaft. Same gear ratio 2:1. The only difference is that it does not have the preload pin on the top of the driveshaft like my old one. Will it still work or no? Can anyone tell me the difference?

Pre load is just that. Early model that loads tha top driveshaft bearing in its race when its pressed inta place by tightening tha gear case to tha down housing. Tha spring loaded pin pushes against tha crank. Don't remember what year it went away.

Any 2.0, 2.4, 2.5 V6 gear case tha same length will interchange from day one...........Doesn't mean that one is as good as tha other though. Pre load probably tha weakest then tha small XR4/6 right in there with it.........Kinda a toss up..
