1985 bayliner Capri 18ft shift gear problems

Hello everyone,

I'm having problems with my boat I just bought a week ago.
It is a 1985 bayliner Capri with an OMC 350 8 cylinder.

The problem: the boat accelerates fine and reverse works good. The problem is I cannot place it in neutral straight from accelerating. What I have to do is go from acceleration to deceleration, to reverse then into neutral. The only way to get into neutral is to put on reverse first, there no other way to get into neutral.

Tell me what is wrong i would greatly appreciate it.

Your lower shift cable is failing.

is it a cobra drive or 800 stringer?

I was assuming Cobra which I think was a bad assumption considering it is an 85.

Your lower shift cable is failing.

Now is the lower shift cable something I can fix by myself?

Does anybody have a guide or diagram that can help me fix this issue?

Could the shift control be the cause or is it the lower shift cable?

I was assuming Cobra so it may or may not be that. I am not an expert on the 800 stringer.

With a couple tools,your OMC manual and a couple beers it can be done in less then 2 hours.
Hard part would be finding the cable. What I would do is look on craigslist for a complete lower with cable. Cant never have to many spare parts.
