Looking to replace my U-joints but one part isn't clear from my manual.

When I pull the stern drive, will the drive shaft pull out of the drive, just like it comes out of the splines in the drive coupler? Or do I have to do further disassembly (bearing cap, etc) in order to get the shaft to release?

Thanks!

Bearing retainer etc. They suggest a special tool as well. I;ll post a link to a manual that will help in a minute.

Re: 1985 Alpha One U-Joint Replacement

i've read about folks that are willing to grind off some of an ear of the retainer nut so as to be able to remove the ujoint.
myself, i couldn't bring myself to do that so had to buy the wrench. it really works good considering that nut is torqued to 200 ft lbs...
i've also read that grinding it off works good too... but i've only read about that....

also, if ya don't have a ujoint press, get one. i don't have much good to say about harbor freight stuff. but their ujoint press does work. along with the press, get the adapter tool http://www.iboats.com/U_Joint_Adapter/dm/*******.649208066--**********.957554475--view_id.271201. between these two tools, life will be easy for ujoint R&R...
