1985 9.8 grumble

i have a 1985 mercury 9.8hp ob that makes a grumble noise, it only does it when u put it in gear and after that, right as you start it the noise can't be herd until u put it in gear and after that it can be herd in any any gear F, N, R, i don't know whats making the noise but it sounds like it's grinding concret, do you know of any mercurys that make this noise?

Is the noise coming from the lower unit, or the motor?

i'm thinkin it coming from the top of the lower unit

First things first, pull the lower drain plug on the lower unit and see if you have lube, water, or aqua-lube (milky oil) in your gearcase.<br /><br />Scott.
