Hey this motor has been a pain. I bought a project boat and I am finished just need to get the motor running right. someone had bypassed the main circuit breaker and fried most of the grounds and the wires to the rectifier were pretty shot. I replaced the whole harness, the fuel pump diaphram, went through the carbs and cleaned up the carbs and replaced gaskets. did a link and sync, set timing. there is strong spark to all cylinders. I went through the wiring for the coils, trigger and cdi moduals and redid alot of it.it looks like they lost the orange wire output on one cdi because they changed the wiring to output through the redwire to cylinder #3 which seems to be the only cylinder running perfect. it is a 8 wire trigger but they only have 6 wires hooked up. both orange and greens running to one cdi and a red and white to the other cdi which is only running one cylinder. it did have some bad grounds for the coils but I fixed that and it still misses pretty bad on cylinder #1. I can pull the plug wire off and there isnt that much change in idle but if I pull the others one by one it dies. compression is #1 125 #2 130 #3 130. any help would be greatly appreciated. when I first tried running the boat it would only go 10 mph and 3000 rpm. I am starting to get fed up so I need someone elses calm mind to help me through this thanks again. I also replaced the rectifier and main circuit breaker. model number is 856X5L

First, If indeed it is an 8 wire trigger: An 8 wire trigger is a 4 cylinder trigger assembly with each trigger set 90 degrees apart. 6 wire three cylinder triggers are set 120 degrees apart.

So your engine is firing 90, 180, 360 or 90, 180, 270. instead of 120, 240, 360. In any case, there is a 30 degree error. It is amazing that the engine runs at all.

I don't need to tell you to replace the trigger with a correct one, do I?

After being certain that the correct trigger is installed, then troubleshoot the CD boxes. Before that, you can do nothing.

thx I appreciate it I thought it sounded like the timing was off. especially since I had strong spark. I didnt know for sure though about the 8 wire. I have a question though can I use a trigger from an 86 if it is a 6 wire. it doesnt have the connectors. it has the terminal board mounts but I can solder the connectors to it. I can get it for alot cheaper. I just want to make sure it works.
