Re: 1985 70hp evenrude wont throddle up
TonyD.... Regardless of the problem, always start by:

1 - Check the compression. Should be in the 100 psi range and even on all cylinders.

2 - Remove the spark plugs, rig up a spark tester and set the gap to 1/4". Crank the engine. The spark should jump that 1/4" gap with a strong blue flame on all cylinders.

If the above are as they should be, in all probability, your problem is due to fouled/clogged carburetors. If so, remove, clean, and rebuild them.

Note that many boaters (not mechanics) think that since they can rev up the engine in neutral that the engine is fine. This is not the case as any engine can be reved up in neutral, even if it is running on half of the cylinders involved.
