when I use the shift lever at the controller is when it stalls. It is when the timing lever on the engine starts to move that it stalls.if I throddle up directly from the carbarotor it doesnt stall.only when I use the shift lever.I hope I have explained it better.thank you for responding.

Hi tonyd and welcome to the forum.

Wonder if you could supply a little history about your engine.

How long have you owned the engine and did this problem just crop up. Has it been setting for an extended period of time?

Here's a couple things to look at.

Take a look at the wire harness that comes from under the flywheel. This will be the one that moves as the timeing lever moves. Look for broken or frayed wires that may be ground out the stator and causing the engine to stall. Would still like to here the history on the engine.

Thanks!

reply to obj.I had bought the boat with this motor on it last year with the engine problem.
I took it to a mechanic who said you need a rotor, distributor cap and points and wanted to charge me $500.00.Well I dont know that much about outboards but I do know that the points are not worn at all and as far as I know thy just act as a switch and not a high spark point. As far as the rotor goes it was a little black inside but not that worn.and I couldnt find a dist. cap.I could be dead wrong but I dont think that was the problem.I did check the wires wnder the stator and checked the coils for cracks and all looks ok.

Hi tony...could you please post the model number of your engine? Maybe just me but an 85' with a rotor cap and points don't sound right to me. Let's check the model and ensure we have the right year. Thanks

TonyD.... Regardless of the problem, always start by:

1 - Check the compression. Should be in the 100 psi range and even on all cylinders.

2 - Remove the spark plugs, rig up a spark tester and set the gap to 1/4". Crank the engine. The spark should jump that 1/4" gap with a strong blue flame on all cylinders.

If the above are as they should be, in all probability, your problem is due to fouled/clogged carburetors. If so, remove, clean, and rebuild them.

Note that many boaters (not mechanics) think that since they can rev up the engine in neutral that the engine is fine. This is not the case as any engine can be reved up in neutral, even if it is running on half of the cylinders involved.
